During the 2011–2012 school year, the Brookline Education Foundation will fund
approximately $80,000 in Systemwide grants in the following areas:
EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES
English Language Arts Benchmark Assessment and Leveled Literacy Intervention– This is a multi-year grant to
increase the capacity of teachers to provide comprehensive literacy instruction. In year one, up to 50 educators will attend a Benchmark Assessments System workshop at Lesley University. In addition, Brookline Literacy Specialists will receive training in a Leveled Literacy Intervention model for working with struggling students.
Responsive Classroom 2– Responsive Classroom (RC) is a highly effective social curriculum that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe classroom. It is the goal of the Public Schools of Brookline to train every K-5 educator in RC1 in the next three years. This grant provides a course for 25 teachers in RC2, which is essential for full implementation of the curriculum. The grant also will fund participation for a Brookline educator in the first year of the National Facilitators Program, thereby building capacity to provide in-house RC training.
Performing Arts Music Production Technology– This is a two-year grant to provide training for K-8 music teachers in the integration of technology into the music curriculum for all grades, with emphasis this year on the 7/8 grade Music Production course.
Differentiation Initiative (year 2 of 3) – BHS mathematics teachers will participate in workshops on assessing student understanding and planning instruction based on that assessment for grades 9 to 12.
Social Studies Professional Development Initiative (year 3 of 3) – Now in its last year, this grant supports a third
Summer Institute to enable K-12 teachers to become proficient in new content being added to the social studies
curriculum. In year three, the institute will provide professional development in political science. After the initial
summer course offering, an on-line version of the course will be developed and made available to teachers.
Public Private Partnership (year 3 of 3) – With partial funding from this grant, Brookline has developed an
educational partnership with the Landmark School, a private school specializing in educating students with language-based differences. This pilot program provides an opportunity for general and special educators to learn from and apply Landmark’s expertise in the classroom to benefit all students.
Equity Project (year 9) – MSAN Expenses – This grant will support Brookline’s involvement in Minority Student
Achievement Network professional development activities, including planning a Brookline mini-conference.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP GRANTS
Leadership Initiative (year 2 of 3) - This grant will fund continued professional learning for school leaders including principals, coordinators, and central office personnel.
Superintendent’s Fund (annual) – This grant funds the superintendent’s attendance at selected meetings and
conferences that focus on educational equity, such as MSAN, Harvard University Leadership, and the American
Association of School Administrators.
